Low Country Uprising

Wed, 30 Apr 2008 13:29:32 PDT
A single spring Classics season is often a pretty small sample from which to detect major trends, but over the last month I've been sensing a pretty huge development in the sport: the return of Dutch Cycling. The Netherlands can count itself as an original pillar of the sport, with champions too various to recount here, but in recent years Dutch riders have had little impact. Meanwhile, Belgian champions seem to pop up every year or two, particularly in Flanders, for reasons we've beaten to dea

CBC: And now for an honest middle o’ the road perspective… (no—just kidding!)

CBC: And now for an honest middle o’ the road perspective… (no—just kidding!) News item: dozens of ducks land in an oil sands “tailings” pond in Alberta which is usually protected by bird-scaring techniques to keep the birds away; and are poisoned, and die. It’s a tragedy. Clearly. The company is sad, the government is sad, we’re all sad. No doubt one or two heads will roll, and probably, people will be more careful in the future. We all hope so. And none of us need to be lectured about

A look back at the polls: April Written by Stephen Tall on 30th April 2008 – 9:39 pm We tend not to be too poll-obsessed here at LDV - of course we look at them, as do all other politico-geeks, but viewed in isolation no one poll will tell you very much beyond what you want to read into it. Looked at over a reasonable time-span and, if there are enough polls, you can see some trends. Here, in chronological order, are the results of the most recent nine polls since our last round-up on 28th M

Albert Hofmann the inventor of drug LSD has died aged 102

Register, UK

Discoverer of LSD dead at 102

Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, who in 1943 accidentally discovered the hallucinogenic effects of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), has died at the age of 102, Reuters reports.

Hoffman passed away at his home in Basel on 29 April as a result of a heart attack, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.

The chemist had in the late 1930s been working on possible medical applications of alkaloid derivatives of the fungus ergot and subsequently synthesised a number of such derivatives, including LSD. It wasn't until 1943, however, when a small amount accidentally leaked onto his hand that the compound's mind-blowing capability was revealed.

Hoffman recounted a "remarkable restlessness, combined with slight dizziness", elaborating: "At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxication-like condition, characterised by an extremely stimulated imagination.

"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight too unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours. After some two hours this condition faded away."

The rest is history. While the CIA infamously experimented with the mind-control possibilities of LSD during the 1950s and 60s in its Project MK-ULTRA, it was Timothy Leary and his "turn on, tune in, drop out" mantra who popularised the substance among the hippy movement and brought it to the attention of the wider world.

Hoffman maintained the movement had "hijacked" the drug and insisted he'd produced it "as a medicine and not as a substance to be abused". He continued to defend its possible use "in analysis of how the mind works, hoping it could be used to recognise and treat illnesses like schizophrenia", long after it was banned in the 1960s.

25 Super Cool Paper Inspired Website Designs

One of my favourite ’styles’ in web design is one that takes inspiration from traditional media such as paper and cardboard. Rotten Timing of Bands and Heart Attacks

Diary time again. Wednesday afternoon, I ended up doing something I had never done before, and the only reason was because the Pope was visiting America. Normally, I would be indifferent to such a thing, and it was exactly my complete indifference that drove me to this point. You see, when I eat lunch in my house, I eat in my living room, usually around 12.30 or 1.00, while I watch television, often the news. It's usually the only television I watch in the course of a day, unless it's Thursday,
